Hair Wars
Fantasy hair is defined as a hairstyle so extravagant no one would attempt to wear it in real life. "Hair battle" theme nights began in Detroit nightclubs in the mid-1980s, and Hair Wars has since grown to become a touring event that takes place several times a year. It’s less a competition than a "hair entertainment show" in which professional hairstylists try to outdo each other.
Photographer David Yellen and writer Johanna Lenander began documenting the Hair Wars community after attending an event at the Apollo Theatre, traveling around the United States to photograph and interview the participants.
Some suitably over-the-top cover typography, restrained interior display text, and days spent trying to choose and properly order what will probably be the most far-out imagery I'll ever have the opportunity to engage with. And it's gaining another audience in its latest form: a coloring book!
